You can re-cell a great many older e-bike batteries giving the bike a new lease of life.
At this time of year, many e-bikes are dusted off after prolonged storage. Older electric bike batteries begin to degrade and when the bikes are used the range has deteriorated. But, if your e-bike is actually running, you can be sure that the problem is battery related.
Many e-bike battery shapes cannot be re-placed with new, because the supplier is unknown or not in business any more. But, in many cases batteries can be re-built in in their original case.
An electric bike with no battery has little value. But a re-celled battery can give the bike a new lease of life.

At edevon-ebikes we use a battery rebuild specialist. This company imports many purpose built, factory made cell packs of different capacities and shapes. These can be slotted in and re-wired to the existing terminals. These packs all include a dedicated new BMS (Battery Management System)
It is the BMS that keeps your battery safe. It is programmed to control the rate of discharge and to switch the battery OFF in the case of overheating either when riding or charging. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) in a report published in January 2025 emphasises the importance of BMS design. You can read the report here
“Silver Fish” Batteries for Axcess & FreeGo Bikes
Many older Axcess electric bikes use a battery known as a “Silver Fish. ”This fits down the rear of the seat post. These batteries can nearly always be re-built and we hold spare parts for them too. We have replacement locks and battery tops, if they have become cracked or broken. We also have battery bases, rails and connecting terminals.
Silver Fish batteries will also fit all FreeGo bikes with the battery down the back of the seat post, – including those fitted with the customised black FreeGo battery.
If you have an unusual shaped battery that needs replacing, ask us what we can do. Other than courier cost we will not ask for payment until your re-built battery is ready to come back to you.
