The e-bike battery is the fuel tank of the bike, and probably the most expensive component.
Many electric bikes will remain economically repairable for the life of 2 batteries, so the ability to secure a replacement battery when the original fails is important. Ampere, Hikobike and Wisper batteries are normally available ex-stock.
Basically, the battery has 3 components. The cells which are soldered together to provide the power, The BMS, electronic battery controller and the battery box which contains the pack and must be fitted.
The Battery Box
There are several standard box manufacturers. The battery box that fits down the rear of the seat post and is known as a “Silver Fish” is widely available. It uses a standard aluminium extrusion and can be found in several lengths. If you purchase one from a different supplier than the original, make sure that the polarity at the base is the same as your original. Make sure your new battery is supplied with a battery rail and plastic base as they can vary. Many boxes are now made by “Reention” and you may find their name on your battery box which will assist you in purchasing a replacement.
Battery Cells and BMS
The price of batteries varies enormously, and customers often wonder why. The answer usually lies in the quality of the cells. On the best batteries you will often find such names as “LG”, “Samsung”, “Panasonic”. Such brands have the reputation for being the best. The battery may also have “Chinese” cells. This may not mean that the cells are of poor quality, but they are likely to be slightly cheaper that the big brand names.
However, I have heard a story that battery cells that fail quality control by their manufacturer are the sold off and used in cheap electric bike batteries.
Battery re-builds

If the BMS fails, unless your original supplier can supply a spare, the battery will have to be replaced. If you cannot source a suitable box for your new battery, many can be re-built in your original box. This may not be a cheap option if good quality cells are used and the cell importer has had to pay Dangerous Goods Airfares on his stock. The new battery will have a new BMS
