Edevon-ebikes staff have been re-celling a wide range of e-bike batteries since 2020, but in the last 18 months re-celling the Stow-e-Way battery has become our most prolific. This is because of the popularity of the bike, large numbers of failures, lack of support from Raleigh and the high price of new batteries.
Depending on the age and condition of your battery, it may be possible to “Wake the battery up”. Older batteries can be re-celled with new internal cells and BMS (Battery Management System) Finally, it can be replaced with a brand-new battery. This guide explains the common causes of Stow-e-Way battery failure and the options available to get your bike back on the road.

Why has my Raleigh Stow-e-Way battery Stopped Charging?
The most common reason for failure to charge is long term storage without a boost charge from time to time. Batteries can also refuse to charge because they have been kept in damp conditions and there is corrosion inside the battery. There is also the possibility that the charger is not working.
Can My Battery be “Woken Up?”
The operation of the battery is controlled by the BMS. This electronic device inside the battery is designed to control its operation. For example, if the battery overheats while you are riding, the BMS will shut down the battery and the bike will stop. When you plug in the charger, the BMS decides whether the cells are in a fit state to be charged. If the cells have discharged below a certain voltage, the BMS refuses to allow the charging process.
We have specialist equipment that can temporarily raise the battery voltage to a level that allows the BMS to permit charging again.
This only works if there is nothing else wrong with the battery -such as one or more dead cells or internal corrosion.
It is only worth trying if your battery is about 3 years old or less – unless you just want a working battery to assist with selling the bike. We have had success with older batteries, but find that the cells are depleted and the bike has a very short range – under 10 miles on pedal assist.
Stow-e-Way Battery Re-Cell Service –The most Popular Option
Because new Stow-e-way batteries are very expensive in the UK, it is usually more economical to rebuild your existing battery with a brand-new factory-produced cell pack and BMS. We re-use your battery case and charging port. But, unfortunately, with older Stow-e-Way batteries your charger will not “talk” to the new battery and you have to have a new charger.

They are guaranteed for 2 years and should give 5 or 6 years good service. But like all e-bike batteries they need to be looked after properly and preferably used regularly.

Why does the charging light on the charger stay green?
The battery is not accepting a charge. It may already be fully charged and ready to go.
The battery has over discharged and the BMS (battery management system) will not allow the battery to recharge.
There is another internal fault in the battery.

How long should a Stow-e-Way battery last?
A battery looked after well and used regularly should last at least 6 years.
How can I make my battery last longer?
The batteries that do best are used frequently. 2 or 3 times a week would be good. They are normally rated for 1000 full charges.
Can completely dead batteries be revived?
As long as the battery case is in good condition, the cell pack and BMS can be replaced. If needed the charging port can also be replaced.
Is Re-celling cheaper than a new battery?
Due to the high cost of importing e-bike batteries from Germany, Re-celling is usually about £150 cheaper than a brand new battery.
When my battery is fully charged the bike only has a short range
The Stow-e-Way battery is quite small with a 6.8Ah capacity when new. If the cells are old and depleted, the battery may only have a 3.4Ah capacity and this may give you about 10 miles range on pedal assist.
Can I leave my battery unused over the winter?
Do not leave your battery in a cold damp shed and protect it from frost. Ideally the battery should be inside a warm room and about 80% charged. A few minutes charge every couple of months will stop it over discharging. If you fully discharge the battery while riding it should be charged within 24 hours
